Little Sister Erika Graduates

Mary English and Erika have been a  BBBS Match since Erika was in 1st grade.  On May 26, 2017, Erika graduated from Adrian High School.  So, this means, sadly that their Match will end, but on a positive note, not their friendship.

We wish Erika the best.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake 2017

Our 18th Bowl for Kids’ Sake was a success this year with a record number of teams signed up to bowl.  We had 71 teams representing schools, local businesses, and local civic clubs, and church groups.  We had two corporate sponsors-Cargill and Amigos/United  Supermarkets.   We had 24 T-shirt sponsors and 9 Lane sponsors, and  local businesses donated door prizes for our bowlers.  The two day event was held on March 24th and 25th and Sugarland Mall Lanes.

Gordon and staff kept everything running smoothly.  The theme this year was “Fiesta” and many of the teams dressed in fiesta-appropriate attire and the bowling alley was transformed into a fiesta atmosphere with full-size mariachis and cactus inflatables donated by Silver Screen.   BBBS board members, agency staff, volunteers,  Big Brothers and Big Sisters and their Littles were on hand both days to deliver a fun-filled, exciting activties for the registered bowlers.  A YETI cooler was donated by Texas Threads and tickets were sold to generate more funds for the event.  The YETI was won by Harold Barrett.  A 32″ TV was donated by Raul Pesina and it was won by Mario DeLaCruz.

Thank you to all who helped make “Fiesta” Bowl for Kids’ Sake a success.

Volunteers needed for BBBS programs

Do you have one hour, one day per week, to spend with a child-one-to-one? You may choose the setting–school or community. You can make a BIG difference in the time you spend with a child. The positive outcomes benefit the child as well as the community. All that is required is your time and friendship. Our community has many children from single-parent homes and parents and family members involved in the criminal justice system. This opportunity is available at no cost to the child or to the mentor. As it has been said, “A smile 🙂 is worth a thousand words.” Why not invest in the future of a child and your community? As an individual, or as a church or club project, or friend challenge, join us in our effort to provide positive role models in the lives of our youth.

“Improving opportunities available to disadvantaged youth and investing in their success through proven programs greatly benefit the the US economy and individual communities. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a youth investment program which costs on an average of $1320 per year vs. youth incarceration $112,423 per year.
Traditional models of community-based mentoring have been shown to have positive effects for disadvantaged youth. We are nationally recognized mentoring program that pairs youth from disadvantaged backgrounds with a volunteer mentor for several hours per month. Program evaluations show that mentees skipped school less often, felt more confident in their ability to complete schoolwork, and had higher GPAs after participating. Students receiving mentoring have also been shown to be less likely to engage in violent behavior towards peers or to use drugs or alcohol.”

Bowl for Kids’ Sake 2015

Our 16th annual Bowl for  Kids’ Sake was a success due to our  many sponsors and team participation this year.  We had 70 teams bowling this year for a total of 380 bowlers.  Our theme this year was “Bowling at the Lanes” with a retro 50’s 60’s atmosphere.  Many bowlers dressed up to match the 50’s 60’s theme which made it a fun and enjoyable event.

All areas of the community were represented with a team this year.  Financial institutions, local businesses, city, and government offices, as well as individual families, and friends.  Local businesses donated over 200 door prizes for our event. A 55″ TV was donated by Steve and Sharon Hodges, and tickets were sold for a chance to win the TV.  Karen Boren, Justice of Peace , was the happy winner of the TV.

We want to thank KNNK and KPAN, and the HerefordBrand for their media announcements promoting our event. Our many food and drink  donors, and many volunteers and Littles,  including Coca-Cola Distributing , Delta Xi and Xi Epsilon members, Sonic, Diego Barela,  J Dale Butler, Belle Casarez, Shirley Carlson, Lindsay Chandler, Jennifer Eggen, Lisa Garcia, Danny Jones, Charlie Kerr,  Cindy Marquez, Joe Mendez, Rosa Vallejo,  Juanita’s Burritos,  Moovies 6,  Raul Pesina, Valerie Pesina,  Rent-A-Center, Richard Sauceda, Toby Torres.

The lanes were in great working order, shoes and  bowling balls were shiny and ready to go.   Thanks to Gordon , Rudy, and assistants.

If you were not a part of the fun this year, make plans for next March 2016.  Plans are underway.

Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, bowlingball20151_1901professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
